The project
Can we bring artificial intelligence to children without choosing between exposing their conversations, receiving inappropriate responses, or completely preventing its use?
Famil·IA was born when looking for a way to bring artificial intelligence closer to children without giving up privacy or turning parents into a permanent filter. Not finding a solution that combined both things, we started to build it in our house.
The idea is based on a technical and an educational decision. The technique: Run the model inside the home so conversations aren't sent to outside providers. The educational: apply profiles, modes and guidelines that help respond according to the age and agreements of each family.
The model and conversations are managed on a home computer using Ollama, Node.js, and SQLite.
Profiles by age, modes, limits, guidelines, reviewable memory, local library and alerts.
We are learning which explanations, guidelines and tours are most useful for children and adults.
The project works to make installation easier and expand validation with new families.
The prototype brings together Speaking, Homework, Reading, English, Mathematics, Programming, 3D/Tinkercad, Challenges, Games, Curiosity, Calm and Role. The spaces share the configuration of the profile, but pursue different objectives: understanding, practicing, creating, conversing or expressing a simple emotion.
The public demo recreates four routes – Curiosity, Homework, Stories and Calm – through selectable questions. It is not a live conversation and does not connect to the home installation.
We are looking for families, educators and professionals who want to learn how the prototype works, try it when there are new opportunities and share their opinion. The form on the cover only collects applications from adults.
